Why can’t flexible food packaging be recycled today?

A significant portion of flexible food packaging — most snacks, meat and cheese packaging, stand up pouches — is made from multiple layers of different plastics fused together. Each layer does a job: one adds strength, another blocks oxygen, another controls moisture. Because the layers are incompatible materials that can’t be separated, the whole package is unrecyclable. Even clean, unused production scrap can’t be melted down and reused — it goes to the landfill.

What has Singularity Polymers developed?

A patent-pending additive, based on ionic liquid and clay chemistry, that goes into standard polyethylene film. The result is a mono-material film — one type of plastic from start to finish with oxygen and moisture barrier comparable to today's multi-layer structures. Because it's one material, it recycles in the polyethylene streams that already exist.

What does "drop-in replacement" mean in practice?

No new equipment, no line retooling, no retraining. The additive is incorporated into the blown-film extrusion process converters already run. Switching to recyclable packaging becomes a materials decision, not a capital-investment decision.

Is it truly cost-neutral?

Yes. The additive replaces costly extra layers rather than adding to them, so recyclable mono-material film comes in at price parity with conventional multi-layer alternatives. It also lets manufacturers reclaim and reuse their own process scrap in-house.

How is this different from other mono-material approaches?

Other approaches trade something away. Barrier coatings and "recyclable" multi-layer structures still require new materials or process changes. Existing mono-material films compromise on barrier. Ours targets multi-layer-equivalent barrier, in a true mono-material film, at cost parity, with no new equipment.
